Your Favourite Music Video and Why (Whole Group)

Your Favourite Music Video and Why

(Harry) The above music video is my favourite music video because not only is the music good the music fits in time with the editing of the music video. The narrative is hilarious and it involves a group of ducks going in to the city and chasing after some gang members after they nicked an old ladies purse and one by the one the ducks get there revenge and then at the end the main gang member and main duck face off and the duck runs straight through the gang member. Apart from this great narrative the fact that it is ducks chasing them makes it ten times better.

(Samuel) This music video by Queen is my favourite music video because I really like the 80s' style game being played. The narrative is rather interesting and involves a young boy who is playing an 80s' game and a man that appears to be invisible, hence the song title, who runs around the house which is within the game that the little boy is playing on his computer.

(Charlotte) My favourite music video is Saturn Barz By Gorillaz because it has a unique style that i haven't seen in any other music videos. It combines retro themes with futuristic themes, and focuses on appearance rather than logic to create a video that is visually stunning and also full of intrigue. The narrative is that the band in the video is moving to a new house which is possessed by spirits that terrorise them and even transport them to different dimensions.

Analysing these music videos has helped us because we have seen what makes them a really good music video and we could include things from their videos and incorporate them into are music video like putting in a good, clear narrative.

Representations in Music Video (Charlotte)

The main representation of our music video is teenagers, as our video focuses on 3 teenage characters and their narrative. They are shown in a positive way, as all of their actions are presented as new, fun and interesting, and even when they do things wrong it is presented as endearing and relatable. Like many films targeted at teenagers, our narrative focuses on teenagers having an adventure and rebelling against older characters, focusing all their attention on things like fun and romance and doing what they want to do rather than what is sensible. They are presented as the heros of the narrative, and this representation makes any teenagers that watch the video feel complimented by the video and may even want to replicate the actions of the teenagers in the video. Since our main target audience is teenagers and young adults, this helps us cater to them and makes them like the video more.

The actions of the teenagers are also compared to the actions of older characters, with the actions of the older characters being presented as boring and/or tedious and making the actions of the teenagers look better comparison. This distinction presents older characters as bad and younger characters as good, and puts a focus on youth being better than age, and while this does alienate any older people that may watch our video, it will further entice teenagers with a rebellious attitude that intentionally go against older people, and will make them relate more to the content.

The main reason for which we have decided to represent the teenage social group in our music video is that we believe that teenagers are rebellious and will do whatever they want irrespective of the consequences.

Plot and Narrative work for the Music Video (Harry)

Plot

In our music video two people get ready and go to a party where they have a "good time" which is the name of the song by Owl City.

Narrative

The narrative of our music video is that we follow two people who are getting ready for a party and then we show them at this party having a "good time" and then towards the end of the song, it shows the two people leaving after having a "good time". Throughout the choruses of this music video, it will be sung by the artist in a recording studio.

Target Audience Brief for the music video (Samuel)

What is a target audience?

A target audience is a particular group at which a product, in this case a music video, is aimed at. Typically, target audiences are split into age ranges, for example, teens, young adults, middle-aged people, retired people and elderly people. This allows the creator to specifically choose a certain type of audience to direct their music video at.

The target audience for our music video of "Owl City & Carly Rae Jepsen - Good Time" is young adults and teens, people aged between 13-26 years old. The class of the people within the music video will be middle and lower / working class. Our video will appeal to our target audience through the adventurous nature of the video. The demographic that our music video will be aiming towards is demographic D who are the working class, as we feel this is the demographic that most relate to what is going on in the music video and who will be a good target audience for us.

We will be implementing an audience theory in our music video, we will be using a few characteristics of Goodwin's theory within our music video which will include links between lyrics and visuals and links between music and visuals because for example, the song and the lyrics will be out about people having a good time and our music video will be based on two people who are having a "good time" doing various things like playing in a park and other similar things.

Music Video Brief (Charlotte)

Two friends meet up and go to a variety of places and show they have a good time wherever they go!

Initial Ideas for Music Video (Harry)

Initial Ideas for Music Video

For our music video we had decided on three different songs to choose between, the three songs we had to decide between were Eurythmics Sweet Dreams (Are Made of These), Calvin Harris' Acceptable in the 80s and the other song was Owl City's Good Time. As a group we decided on Owl City's Good Time as it was a song that we all liked compared to the others where some of the group didn't like the songs.

We chose the electropop genre because it was a genre we all liked so it would be easier to work with as we all like the genre and songs. This will help us when it comes to making our own music video because it will help us come up with ideas as we all like the genre.

Music Video Target Audience Questionnaire Results Analysis (Samuel)

The purpose for this post is that it allows us to analyse the results we have gathered from the questionnaire which we gave to a few people in our target audience.

The first question in the questionnaire was "What is your gender?" We proposed this question to our respondents to get an idea of whether male or female people participated in the questionnaire. 3 out of the 4 respondents were male and 25% of our respondents were female. We noticed that 75% of the people asked were male so we thought that we should definitely try and target males in our work.

We also asked our respondents "Have you heard of the genre Electropop?" Out of the 4 respondents, only 1 person was not aware of the Electropop genre whereas 3 out of the 4 people asked responded Yes to say they had heard of the Electropop genre.

Another question that we posed to our respondents was "Have you heard of these Electropop bands?" All of the respondents had heard of La Roux apart from one person who did not. Only one person had heard of the Electropop band "Kraftwerk" and only two people had heard of 'The Human League'.

We decided to ask our respondents "Have you heard of the band Owl City?". The main purpose of this question was to find out whether they knew about the band or were aware of the band. Out of the 4 people that we asked, 75% said that they have heard of Owl City and only 1 person said that they had not heard of Owl City.

The final question that we asked our respondents was "Have you heard of these Owl City songs?" We asked this because we wanted to gauge the amount of people that are aware of the listed Owl City songs. Out of all of the people that we asked, everyone said that they had heard of the popular song that goes by the name of "Fireflies". Two people had heard of the song that we are creating our music video on "Good Time". Finally, only one person had heard of both "Vanilla Twilight" and "Hello Seattle".

We will use the feedback from our audience in our music video by responding to this feedback and aiming at our target audience in the music video.
